After publishing our favourite chip shops of the past twelve months we thought it fitting to let readers know which our favourite chip shops have been since we started reviewing in 2014. So here goes...
Best of 2014
Swifts, Scarborough - this was one of our favourite Scarborough chip shops. Gone but not forgotten.
New Cod on the Block, Sheffield - The first chip shop we scored 5/5 and one of many we have been to in Sheffield. Everything tasted so fresh. We noted there were lunchtime specials for £2! Cheap but not lacking in quality.
Andy’s, Church Gresley - A renowned chip shop in the area. High time we went back! The chips were chunky with firm, straight edges. The haddock was delicious and steaming hot.
Best of 2015
Junction Fish Bar, Rainworth, Nottinghamshire - The Chip Fiends had an epiphany here. The chips were amazing. This chippy is historically famous for being the spot where The Black Panther was arrested.
The Fish House, Ely, Cambridgeshire - This shop definitely knows how to fry their fish. The portion we had here was so perfectly steamed inside the batter, it slid out!
Best of 2016
Hooked on Fish, Cradley Heath, West Midlands - Bostin' battered chips. Can you believe the mini cod and chips meal was only £2.99 back in 2016?!
New Sole Plaice, Norwich - The friendliest owner we have ever been served by. Great food and a freebie potato fritter!
Long Eaton Fish Bar, Derbyshire - This shop presented consistently good food on a couple of further visits. Unfortunately, it has since changed hands and isn't so good. The happy memories linger on.
Best of 2017
Kerry’s Fish and Chips, Ilkeston, Derbyshire - Always excellent. We have visited a few times. Kerry’s have a genius way of serving peas under the chips that all chip shops should follow.
B My Chip, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands - A chip shop endorsed by Keith Chegwin's 'Perfect Portion Award'. The mini fish, chips and mushy peas cost £3.30 here and were very tasty.
Albert J Ramsbottom, Northampton - A renowned chip shop where we enjoyed an excellent restaurant meal.
Best of 2018
Miller's Haxby, York - the mushy peas tasted deliciously creamy here. Millers were the UK's winning Chip Shop of the Year when we visited.
Queen's Fish Bar, Winshill, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire - Even the local cat knew the food was good here!
Robinson's of Cromford, Derbyshire - Crinkle-cut, soft, tasty chips and some amazing mushy peas.
Best of 2019
Ambergate Traditional Chip Shop, Ambergate, Derbyshire - A friendly owner mixed up some homemade tartare sauce especially for us on our visit. This is a lovely small cafe you should visit after a walk in Ambergate, Derbyshire.
John Dory’s, Quorn, Leicestershire - The best chippy in Leicestershire. The best chippy anywhere?...
Fenham Fish Bar, Newcastle upon Tyne - A very good queuing system and great menu. One of the Chip Fiends had some excellent mushy peas here with a secret ingredient! The meal had a generous portion of scraps too.
Silks at the Croft, Scarborough - The firm, tasty chips blew our socks off here. Some of the best fish and chips we’ve had, although we have heard it has changed hands in recent years.
Best of 2020
Captain Kirk, Kirk Hallam, Derbyshire - The fish was fantastic here. A thin, crunchy, orangey, batter and pure white, moist fish.
Dean's at Northway, Scarborough - Lovely chunky chips, fresh fish, and an entire meal enhanced by batter scraps.
Wendy’s, Sheffield - We visited here twice. Firstly, to try fish and chips, then once again to try a Yorkshire Fishcake. All the food was excellent and good value for money. It even came with sachets of Henderson's Relish. Proper Sheffield!
Best of 2021
Hicks Street, Sheffield - A ‘no-frills’ type chip shop with really fresh, tasty food. One of the Chip Fiends still dreams about this meal! You have to visit if you are near Kelham Island.
Marlin Fish Bar, Oakthorpe, Leicestershire - A proper ‘local’ chippy with quality food. The super-fresh, chunky chips were heavenly.
Upton Fish and Chip Shop, Upton, Lincolnshire - The thrill of queuing and smelling the coal-fired range really added to the experience here! Traditional fish and chips, spicy curry, and delicious, undyed mushy peas.
Best of 2022
Toll Bar Fish and Chips, Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire - This one is worth visiting for the unusual and historic premises as well as the quality food.
Ramshill Fisheries, Scarborough - Our new favourite Scarborough chip shop. Delicious fresh battered fish and chunky chips. Worth a walk from the centre of town and sea front.
Smallfry, Scarborough - An old favourite from Scarborough and consistently excellent over several decades. The chips were cut from soft, new potatoes, and batter scraps were offered as a bonus.
The Camp Fish Shop, St Albans, Hertfordshire - The incredibly thick and tasty curry sauce is something the Chip Fiends will never forget. The succulent cod in light batter was also cooked to perfection.
Bestwood Fisheries, Nottingham - The stars of the show here were the chips. Possibly the best we’ve ever had. The service in the shop was also very helpful too.
Best of 2023
Moores Fish and Chips, Monkston Park, Milton Keynes - Everything was perfect about the meal one of the Chip Fiends had there. The fluffy chips, the succulent haddock and the curry sauce (which was reminiscent of the flavour of roast beef Monster Munch of the 1970s!)
Yorkies Pop Up Chip Shop, Whitwick, Leicestershire - The best chippy van we’ve eaten from. Better than a lot of shops we’ve tried! Proves that good quality food is produced when fried in small batches.
Norfolk Park Fisheries, Sheffield - Super polite and chatty staff and an all-round excellent meal with chips fried from new potatoes, a light, crisp batter on the fish, and creamy, un-dyed peas.
Horestons, Nuneaton, Warwickshire - A nice, lunchtime treat. Chips with a crispy outer and fluffy inner, a good flake to the fish and creamy, delicious mushy peas.
Clopton Catch, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire - This shop had a very good menu. We tried a variety of offerings including the homemade tartare sauce and it was all lovely. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that the chips were lightly battered!
Best of 2024
Angell's Fisheries, Newark, Nottinghamshire - A chip shop that is clearly keen on quality and customer service. Wonderful. Everything is handled professionally from the branding and design of the shop front to the quality of the food. Please try the mushy pea fritters.
Denmark Street Fish and Chip Shop, Bedford - We had some fantastic haddock here with crispy batter, and piping hot, fresh flakes of fish. Mouth watering. The owner thought it so good he was going to order some for his own lunch!
Derbyshire Lane Fish Bar, Sheffield - Yet again Sheffield doesn't cease to amaze us. This chippy served fresh-tasting clean food. The fish came in a brandy-snap crunch of delicious, tasty batter. This Chip Fiend's lunch was almost stolen by a dog as our first YouTube video was being filmed.
Fun facts:
- Our first ever diary entry was for Riverside Fish Bar in Stamford, Lincolnshire. We have since been back to make a YouTube video there.
- The only place we have reviewed fish and chips outside the UK was in New Zealand at Scoops, Upper Hutt in 2017.
- We've only reviewed rock once - at North Sea Fish in London.
- Our favourite fish is haddock.
- Where in the UK serves the best fish and chips? It's hard to make a choice but Sheffield and Scarborough seem like joint winners to us!
What are our ultimate favourite chip shop memories?
- Going on a Chippy Crawl using the i4 Trent Barton bus from Derby to Nottingham and visiting 4 chip shops.
- Cycling to chip shops post-lock down (including some very long, all-day trips of many miles!)
- Queuing for tasty grub at Silk's at the Croft, Scarborough and Upton Fish and Chip Shop, Lincolnshire. Who minds the wait when the prize at the end is so perfect?...
- Being stalked by feline friends begging for a piece of tasty fish!
Toodle-pip!!
