Toll Bar Fish and Chips, Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire

This could be the smallest chip shop in the U.K. It certainly has the type of novelty value that invites custom as well as photographs. The building dates from the 1840s and the first fish and chip business here started in 1926.

Toll Bar Fish and Chips is a popular stopping off point for visitors to the Peak District. A well-deserved chippy lunch or tea is earned here after a country walk. Even the bus stop is identified as being at the chip shop!

The Chip Fiends had a mini cod, Yorkshire fish cake, chips and mushy peas. We also treated ourselves to some Toll Bar Ale, brewed by the nearby Eyam Brewery.

The meal portion was very generous. The cod was a mini portion but easily a regular by other chip shop standards. It was fresh and flaky white, and encased in a delicate crisp batter. The fish here is fried to order.

The Yorkshire fish cakes were ready prepared but as we visited not long after opening time it’s batter was still crisp with evident spiky peaks on its surface. The potato inside was fluffy, with a delicate slice of fish between the layers. Very tasty indeed.

New potatoes were in season on our visit. The chips were fresh and tasty and so fluffy inside they looked like a cloud when split open.

The mushy peas were contenders for the best we’ve ever had. The peas held their shape in an utterly delicious sauce. They were outstanding!! In fact if we return again we might be tempted to just order a great big bowl of these and nothing else. The Toll Bar is an award winning chip shop. The mushy peas are worthy of an award in itself.

At the time of our visit the Toll Bar had a one customer in - one out policy due to its diminutive size. Food was collected from the kitchen door. The shop takes cash or card.
