Word soon reaches us Fiends on the chip vine.
We had heard of a chip shop re-launch in Long Eaton where everything on the menu was being sold at half price for one day only.
Needless to say we had to try it out and made our way to the Long Eaton Fish Bar at 82 College Street, for a car picnic.
The chippy had been open since 11.45am on this day and when we arrived around 6.30pm the shop was heaving with customers. All the staff were working exceptionally hard: frying, taking orders, serving, and wrapping. They wore a uniform of black baseball caps and t-shirts embroidered with the shop's name, and were still in a chipper mood despite having been rushed off their feet all day!
The shop had run out of haddock but there were plenty other delicacies on offer such as cod (small or large), fish bites, scampi, and fish platters - the latter including calamari, prawns, and fish bites.
The Chip Fiends opted for two 'small cod specials'. Cod, chips and sauce of choice in a box for £4.25. One Fiend had mushy peas, the other had Chinese style curry sauce. (Regular curry sauce is also on the menu). This evening's half price menu meant that the meal came to a total of £4.25, yet it would have definitely been worth £8.50 of anyone's money!
The chips were just the kind we like. Freshly fried, chunky, with a nice firm bite, yet fluffy in the middle. The peas and curry sauce were equally good quality, rich, thick and tasty. The fish was delicious. The first time we visited, the thick batter wasn't to our likeness - a personal choice - so we peeled most of it away, even though it did taste fine. On a couple of subsequent visits, however, the batter has been very light. Just enough to seal the fish and keep it tasting succulent and fresh. We enjoyed eating such thin and crispy batter!
The Long Eaton Fish Bar is highly recommended. This is a smart, clean establishment with an unpretentious, good quality menu and fantastic food.
