Moor Fisheries, Sheffield

Moor Fisheries on Cumberland Street is just a stones throw away from the hustle and bustle of The Moor.

This popular chip shop offers takeaway meals or you can eat in at the 52-seater cafe.

Set meals in the cafe include cod, haddock, fishcake, sausage, scampi, pie, roe or rissole with chips, peas, bread and butter, and either tea or coffee.

This Chip Fiend chose to eat in and have a haddock meal. As my pot of tea and slice of bread was brought to the table I was assured that the fish would be 6 minutes. Bottles of Henderson's Relish were on each table along with the ketchup, salt and Sarson's.

The meal soon arrived. The meal looked lovely on the plate and after a quick shake and splash I found that it tasted lovely too. The chips had a kind of soft creamy taste, and the mushy peas, that indescribable tart, earthy, yet smooth flavour. The way the peas mixed in with the chips was very satisfying.

The haddock was very good. A dark but not too thick batter. Dainty flakes inside...

Suddenly the lights went out. I wondered if this was one of those novelty restaurants where one is supposed to eat in the dark and concentrate purely on flavour. However, a member of staff walked through the cafe to a back room and exclaimed jokingly, "who hasn't put any money in the meter?!"

The light returned. The plate was emptied and I drank the last of the milky tea.
