Margaret's Chippy, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, Derbyshire

Margaret’s must be the most anonymous looking chippy I have ever seen. If it hadn’t been frying time and the door not open I could easily have walked past this side-street chip shop and not noticed it!

My timing was good. There were only three customers in front of me. There was a much longer queue when I left, which was testament to the popularity of this shop.

The menu is relatively simple and the prices are low. Cash only please! Excellent wrapping skills (with newspaper) were evident as the female proprietor parcelled orders that had been made by phone. The only fish served is cod in one size. There is also a fritter which looked to be Margaret’s version of a Yorkshire fish cake.I ordered cod, chips, peas and scraps, open. The service was exemplary. Salt and vinegar on the chips, then peas, then scraps, fish, plus more salt and vinegar. The male member of staff was a bit of a comedian:Customer: “it’s good to see you’re back”Owner: “what about me front?!”Customer “I’ve come for my order.”Owner: “You want an order? GET OUT OF MY SHOP!”

The food was excellent. Soft, tasty chips; smooth and creamy homemade mushy peas; flavour-filled flakey scraps!

The fish was in a sensible portion and the batter was light and crisp. It was a shame it had been standing long enough for the cod flakes to go dry.

The shop clearly gets lots of pre-orders on a Saturday (the server was alternately prepping phone orders between walk-ins) and the hotbox was full of fish and fritters waiting to be bought or collected. If the shop could fry some fish as often as they do fresh batches of chips they would be onto a definite winner!
