Hicks Street Fish and Chip Shop, Sheffield

We had walked past this place a few years back and assumed it had closed. It was difficult to find any information about it.

The sign outside reads ‘Hicks Street’ yet Google maps was showing it as Wendy’s. (We visited another Wendy’s in Sheffield that you can read about here).

Any way, it just so happened that we found the place open one day so had to try it. We were glad we did. It may be Sheffield’s best kept secret. It’s one of those quirky places that you look at and think this is either going to be terrible or brilliant.

It only opens for a few hours in the day time (11.15 - 13.45), catering mainly for trades people in the Kelham Island area. In fact when one of us visited I was the only person to enter the shop without a hi-vis jacket on. This made the staff seem surprised to see me and extra-deferential and courteous.

Some of the other customers appeared to be regulars and were involved in friendly chat.

Hicks Street is one of those great places where the server asks if you want salt and vinegar on before they ladle the sauce on. Fantastic. I had fish, chips and curry sauce, open; was quickly served and then crossed over the road to perch on a wall.

The food was excellent. The small cod had a crispy batter that was so thin I could see the fish through it. The cod was pure white and tender.

The chips were very fresh and tasty. Quite delicately cut.

The curry sauce was suitably thick. It was the Chinese style: nice and peppery, and tasted delicious mixed with the vinegar.

The food was faultless. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water. Anyone who works nearby is so lucky to have this place for a lunchtime treat.
