When the Chip Fiends visited this tiny chip shop one Saturday lunch time we were surprised to find a restaurant on the premises. We considered eating in, but on closer inspection noticed that all of the tables were already taken.
Instead, we plumped for a takeaway, and waited for a few short minutes while the fish was fried.
The shop was busy. Busy with an extremely efficient team of staff. Busy with a steady stream of customers queuing from the doorstep.
We saw a pie meal being dished up for someone. Chips in a tray with a splash of gravy. This was followed by a shake and splash of salt and vinegar. Then the pie was placed on top (upside down) and the foil case removed. Finally, more gravy was ladled on top. If you like pie, chips and gravy, this is the place to come.
We, however, had large fish with chips and peas. The chip portions here are very good VFM. Small chips at £1 and medium at £1.20. One of us tried the medium portion but couldn't finish it!
The fish was excellent. A chunky pure white cod portion in thin, crispy batter. We felt like we were by the seaside as we ate this in the warm sun. It was perhaps one of the most satisfying pieces of fresh-tasting fish we have had this year.
The chips were quite thinly cut and lovely. The mushy peas were marvellous soft pearls swimming in an undyed sauce. Definitely prepared on the premises, they had that unmistakeable homemade taste of having been soaked overnight with bicarbonate.
