Silks at The Croft, Scarborough

What else is there to say about this place except that it is brilliant?!

One of the Chip Fiends tasted some of the finest fish and chips they had eaten in years at Silks.

Mouth-wateringly crispy batter around the tastiest piece of haddock. And the scraps!! Heavenly!

Although this Chip Fiend usually likes chips on the chunky side, these were a little slimmer but still packed with flavour and with a good bite. Silks chips had the delicious taste of fresh potato and were perfectly cooked with firm, straight edges. Yum! Plus the staff were constantly replenishing the fryer.

Ok, a bit more information... Silks is quite a distance from Scarborough town centre. It’s a chip shop in the middle of a residential area. There are no seagulls hovering nearby. The only clue that a chippy is in the area is the tempting smell that meets you when you turn into The Whins, just prior to The Croft cul-de-sac.

Expect to queue - this is a very popular chip shop. But the queueing will be worth it.There is a very good queueing system here. Customers snake past the window to the front right of the shop and when they face the fryer at one end of the counter they place their order of anything that is fried to order (fish, battered sausage, Yorkshire fish cake).

Once you reach the server your order will be ready to be boxed. You will be asked if you want scraps. All with cheerful service.

We noted on our visit a sign stating that the haddock had been caught by the HB Grandi in the North East Atlantic. The potatoes were Lincolnshire, and the fryer was Matthew. (Mr Silk, himself).

There are a couple of tables inside and a picnic table in the front garden.

You might like eating your fish and chips by the sea, but I recommend that you forgo this thrill for once and travel inland to Silks. You will be so glad you did.
