Angell's Fisheries, Newark, Nottinghamshire

Angell's is a relatively new chippy but already well established and a favourite with locals. One of the Chip Fiends visited the same spot in 2020 when it was the Barnby Gate Chippy. That was a great shop and so is Angell's.

It was busy on our lunchtime visit. A crowd spilling out onto the front steps were placing orders for freshly fried food.

Between us we had haddock, chips, a mushy pea fritter, homemade fish cake, mushy peas, and homemade tartare sauce. The mushy pea fritter was made to order as we waited. The whole set-up of the shop is very smart, professional and beautifully designed. The staff wear uniforms of aprons and caps.

There’s no immediate place to sit and eat nearby so we strolled to a park down the road to find a bench. The boxed food was still warm and we tucked into our picnic with relish.

The fish cake had a very good ratio of fish to potato and a nice crisp shell of breadcrumbs. The tartare sauce perked it up perfectly.

The mushy peas tasted good but we prefer them a bit runnier. They made a very good pea fritter though, as the fried parcel held together nicely. It wasn’t at all stodgy as one might expect.

The chips were chunky, fresh and satisfying and the haddock was perfect. A generous size, with a light, knobbly batter. The moist flakes of the fish were perfectly steamed inside. Angell's is definitely a shop to return to!
