Clopton Catch, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

This chip shop had been on our radar for a while and when we had the opportunity to visit Stratford-upon-Avon we knew where we were heading for lunch!

A short walk from town took us to the chip shop, we placed our order and sat at a table outside with a pager waiting for the signal to collect our food.

The shop is very smart and modern. There is a large video screen in the window with clips of food to whet the appetite of passers-by and those patiently waiting for their meal.

One of the Chip Fiends ordered regular cod, chips and mushy peas; t’other had ordered homemade fish cake, chips and curry sauce. We shared some homemade tartare sauce.

When we unboxed the food we had a wonderful surprise! The chips were battered! We hadn’t expected that at all. It was a thin coating of batter which made the chips delicately crisp. They had a medium thickness and were nice and fluffy inside.

The fish cake was of good quality with visible flakes of fish, plenty of herbs, and a light crust on the outside.

The cod came in a long fillet, with juicy, firm flakes in a super light crisp batter.

There were options for different styles of curry sauce but we opted for Irish. Although this is rare we have come across it more frequently in the past year. Good news as we really like it and the sauce from Clopton Catch was very tasty. We were also delighted with our creamy mushy peas. Homemade tartare sauce is always a winner. When a chippy makes their own, it shows they really care about their food.

All in all, a fantastic chippy with fish and chips that lives up to the smart, store-front image.
