Andy's Fish Bar is a smart 'neighbourhood' chippy with a reputation that stretches further than its locality of Church Gresley near Swadlincote, on the border of Staffordshire and North West Leicestershire. It came second as 'best chippy' in a national contest in 2008.
As you approach by car, the huge, silver letters 'ANDY'S' are an unmistakeble indication that you are on the right track...
On this visit 2 small fish and chip meals of haddock, chips and mushy peas; and haddock, chips, and curry sauce were ordered. The total cost was less than a tenner. If these were small portions, then a large portion would easily feed two people.
The chips were perfect. Chunky and fresh - with a square-shaped cross-section when bitten.
The haddock was delicious and steaming hot. With quite a thick batter, but jagged and crispy - cracking like brittle ice on a winter puddle.
Although the shop was doing a roaring trade we were served as soon as we stepped through the door! Lots of people were taking their food home with them, or eating in cars, but there's a picturesque park opposite Andy's where you could sit and eat too. The flashing lights of the animated swimming fish by the front door is a nice decorative touch.
