Millers, Haxby, Yorkshire

There was nothing in the heating cabinet except a few scratchings. Nothing. It was empty... That's what we like to see!

Millers at Haxby have a very good ordering system. Your meal is fried to order and you are given a number which is called out by a member of staff when your food is ready.

A short five minutes wait gave us a little time to take in the surroundings. There is a bus stop practically outside the front door, which is handy for those coming from York or the surrounding district. We saw a few customers on this busy day alight the no.1 and no.13 and walk a few steps into Millers.

Some went into the restaurant - a space hidden to the rear left of the takeaway counter. We had originally considered following them... it was tempting to try a Punk IPA with lunch. However, us Chip Fiends tend to prefer a takeaway to a restaurant meal, and as there were a few smart picnic benches outside the shop we had chosen to eat outside.

At Millers there is salt and vinegar on each table and a small, sunken churn houses the wooden forks. Another churn made a rustic vase for some daisies. Other flowers decorated the outdoor space too. The attention to detail everywhere within sight made for a pleasant experience.

We ordered haddock, chips and mushy peas for £7. To this we added a pot of homemade tartare sauce at 50p.

The tartare sauce was the best we had tasted. It had quite a kick to it and good VFM at its portion size. The mushies were excellent too. They had that creamy taste that peas do when you add a dollop of butter. We don't know if Millers do this but it certainly tasted like it. It can help temper the starchy taste and enrich the peas.

The chips were lovely. Pale and soft. The shop filters their oil twice a day which keeps the chips pale and fresh.

The appearance of the fish at first sight was a surprise. The batter was relatively smooth (rather than peaky). However, it was amongst the best batter we have had. It was very thin. One of us made a slide test, tipping up the portion once it had been opened at one end, and found that the fish slipped easily out of its casing. This showed that it had been steamed perfectly inside the batter. (Similar to the takeaway fish we once had at the Fish House, Ely).

The haddock inside had no skin on it, and was a chunky slab of fish about an inch thick. We didn't waste a morsel.

As we made our way to the bin to deposit our recycled packaging we noticed a plaque saying that the space was once a Wesleyan Chapel. For those who believe or not, Millers are serving food 'that endures to eternal life' (John, 6:27).
