Albert J Ramsbottom, Northampton

Albert J Ramsbottom is a very popular restaurant and takeaway in Northampton city centre. The Chip Fiends went midweek at lunchtime.

Most of the (many) tables were already occupied and some reserved. We found a free table and were served within about thirty seconds. We knew what we wanted, the fish and chip special.
The special is cod and chips with mushy peas, a slice of bread and butter and a drink. We had a pot of tea. They do a fish size called "The Whopper" if you prefer.

The tea and bread arrived whilst the cod was frying. It seemed everyone wanted the special, from the sound of waitresses calling orders to the fryer. We had a look at the specials board which had lemon sole, rock and pollock if you wanted something other than cod.

The food soon arrived. The cod was hanging over the edge of the plate and came with a wedge of lemon.

The batter was light and crisp, the skinless cod was cooked to perfection
with succulent white flakes.

The chips were pale and medium cut. These were also very crisp.
The mushy peas were served in a pot. They were un-dyed and delicious.

A very good meal for two at £12.70.
