Scoops, Upper Hutt, New Zealand

The Chip Fiends happened to be on the other side of the world. This did not stop us from sniffing out some fish and chips. One of the local Kiwis directed us towards Scoops in Upper Hutt.

The fish here is simply listed as 'fish' and in contrast to UK pricing, it is cheaper than the chips. The chips here are $3 a portion (£1.50 approx), and the fish is $2.90. The fish is served either battered or crumbed. The Fiends ordered fish in both styles, along with potato chips and kumera chips (sweet potato).

There is a park and playground opposite where you could sit and eat a takeaway. However, as it was raining, we took our meal back to the Kiwi's nest!

We enjoyed the food, but the experience is entirely different to the fish and chips we are used to in the UK. The fish is quite close-textured and reminded us of chicken.

The pale, medium cut chips were good, but we were pleasantly surprised by the kumera chips. There were no sauce accompaniments available here such as curry sauce or mushy peas, so the meal seemed to be lacking in this way. Swapping between potato chips and kumera chips gave the feast some variety.

  1. A good interesting report it's nice to see Fish and Chips Worldwide. It would have been interesting to have know the variety of fish though. Thanks Barry.

  2. Kumara, yes they have it spelled incorrectly on their board. You cannot expect to get mushy peas (yeuch) and curry sauce here. This is Watties tomato sauce territory.
