Our Favourite Chip Shops of 2024

Another year another round-up! Where have we eaten, where have we been?

Still making use of the £2 bus fares we have enjoyed fish and chips in Buckinghamshire, Northampton, Shropshire, Leeds and Halifax amongst other places.

Our first visit to Grimsby, the home of industrial fish preparation was memorable. This included the Fishing Heritage Centre, with its recreation of a vintage chip shop. We followed this with three chippy teas around the town!

We have managed to travel further South West this year, with a couple of chip shops in Cornwall. The journey to Mevagissey involved a ferry ride. Probably the first time we have travelled to a chip shop by boat.

We also visited Stevenage for the first time and enjoyed some really great food in the run up to National Fish and Chip Day.

Yorkshire is still a firm favourite. We usually manage to include some chippy visits to Scarborough and Whitby most years.

Some of our diary entries this year have been on YouTube rather than written blogs. So please do tune into the Fish and Chip Diaries channel to see many more chip shop visits that don’t appear in written form on this blog.

Here is the round-up of our favourite chip shop diary entries of 2024:

The Denmark Street Fish and Chip Shop, Bedford - This is a shop that prides itself on its food. The haddock was so good here the owner told us he couldn’t wait to eat one for himself for lunch.

Derbyshire Lane, Sheffield - We had to enjoy another Sheffield chippy didn't we? The firm flakes of cod were encased inside a 'brandy snap' batter and everything tasted so fresh and clean.

The Regent, Horsforth, Leeds - We had some lovely fish and chips here covered by an abundance of tasty scraps, but unfortunately this shop has since closed down.

The Regent

Hird’s Family Fisheries, Halifax - One of the Chip Fiends visited the shop on a busy Saturday lunchtime. All the food is freshly prepared and there is handy seating outside the front of the shop. Impressive awards grace the walls of the chippy.

A return to The Magpie Cafe at Whitby lived up to expectations. A large portion of curry sauce in a gravy boat and a squeezy bottle of tartare sauce were very much appreciated with the delicious meal of haddock and chips.

Altrincham Fish Bar, Altrincham, Greater Manchester - A lovely traditional chip shop with a handy restaurant area in a smart part of town.

Also in Greater Manchester we visited The Cosy Cod (Stockport), a great chippy: compact in size, but big on service. This is a popular place for your Friday chippy tea!

Trawlers, Loughborough, Leicestershire - The Chip Fiends were so glad to hear that the original owners of The Trawler's Catch had returned to this shop after John Dory's ceased trading here. The cafe meal was perfect and the owner made the customers feel so welcome.

Angell's, Newark - This is an excellent shop in North Nottinghamshire. Expect to find a queue outside the door!

We visited two Sea and Earth fish and chip shops this year. One of them in Eastwood, Notts, just a couple of days after opening and one in Loughborough. Both served perfectly fresh food and the Irish curry sauce was divine.

Olde English Chippy in Kimberley, Nottinghamshire also provided a comforting treat on a cold, Winter's evening with its thick, tasty curry sauce clinging to soft, chunky chips.

Kerry’s Fish and Chips, Ilkeston - We've blogged about this chippy a couple of times before. The recent visit was to the cafe which had been refurbished since we first went. We ate a 'whale' of a cod here and the service was very good.

Kerry's

JJ’s Plaice, Stevenage,  Hertfordshire - The fish, chips and Irish curry (again!) one of us ate here was excellent. The shop has cafe tables but there are also places to sit and eat outside in the shopping precinct.

Billy’s All Day Diner, Northampton - One of the Chip Fiends treated themselves to a Sunday lunch of fish and chips here. The chips were up there amongst the finest we've ever had.

Ramshill Fisheries, Scarborough - We returned to this Scardy chip shop to make a video after first being wowed by the quality of their haddock and chips in 2022. This could be the contender for our favourite chippy in the town since Swifts closed.

Cromford Fish and Chips, Derbyshire didn’t disappoint either. We returned here for a YouTube video (after first reviewing in 2018) and the local cat came to say “hello” again! The shop still serves delicious, soft, crinkle-cut chips.

We already have more YouTube entries lined up. Subscribe to the channel as there is usually a new video each week.

Take care and enjoy your fish, chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and homemade tartare sauce!
