Trawler's, Loughborough, Leicestershire

“We took a couple of years break but didn’t enjoy it so we came back.” Thus the owner of Trawler’s summarised the reason that one of Loughborough’s favourite chip shops made a comeback in 2023, after a short interim when the premises was a branch of John Dory’s. Trawler’s was previously named Trawler’s Catch but as the abbreviated version has the same owners they can proudly announce on the door ‘established 1983.’

I visited on a Saturday lunchtime for small haddock, small chips and mushy peas and dined in. The food which was cooked to order soon arrived on a very warm plate with metal cutlery. Several other diners were in and the owner was being very chatty and friendly with everyone.

The mushy peas were outstanding. They had the home-soaked starchy flavour and a good, sloppy texture. I perked them up with vinegar.

The small haddock was more like a regular from any other shop. It was served skinless in a tasty, crisp batter. The flesh of the fish was nice but I’d have preferred it a little more moist.

The chips were firm and chunky with nice fluffy innards. The portion of chips was generous but I managed to eat the whole meal. Welcome back Trawler’s!Ratings out of 5:Fish (small haddock): 4Chips: 5Mushy peas: 5Shop / service: 5Over all: 5
