John Dory’s, Loughborough, Leicestershire

John Dory’s Loughborough is open for business! We’ve been looking forward to this day for ages.

When we’d heard that the Trawler’s  Catch had closed we were sad as that was a good and reliable chippy. When we heard that it was to been taken over by John Dory’s we heaved a sigh of relief.

We had about a two hour window to get here on a train and get back home before all the services stopped early for the evening. In we walked, admiring the bright and clean interior.

We had wondered how they were going to fit in a seating area but someone had done a good job designing the layout of the shop, it looked twice as big as the Trawler’s Catch did.

You’ll be pleased to know that the food is cooked to order here, and they were frying tons of chips in anticipation of a busy evening.

One of us went for cod loin, chips and mushy peas. The other Chip Fiend went for haddock, curry sauce, chips and tartare sauce.

The food was served in their branded boxes and a big plume of steam billowed out as I lifted the lid on mine. The portion of chips was humongous. The cod and haddock were both succulent and had a magnificent flaking. The haddock was skin on with a pale golden light batter, this also came with a wedge of lemon.

The chips had a delicate crispy outer and a melt in the mouth soft and fluffy inner. The mushy peas were a natural colour and tasted super creamy. The curry was your standard chippy curry and the tartare sauce was thick and delicious.

There were enough chips left over to take home to make a chip butty.

It was time to dash off to the train but we’ll definitely return.
