JJ's Plaice, Stevenage, Hertfordshire

Stevenage. The new town. You might recognise this urban space as a location for Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush (1968). This 1960s light-hearted, 'coming-of-age' drama included a scene in a chip shop. I wonder where that was?

JJ’s was very busy on the Saturday lunch time that we visited. It is bang in the centre of the pedestrian shopping precincts in the centre of town. The owner was sporting a very dashing National Fish 'n' Chip Day yellow T Shirt. A very good sign!

There are chairs and tables inside the chippy and plenty of benches outside in the pedestrian area.

One of us Chip Fiends plumped for the lunch special of small cod and chips at £8.50 but with a pot of curry sauce, which brought the total cost to £10. The fish was fried to order and as the shop was so busy, the fryer was frequently being replenished with fresh batches of chips. A short while later I was sitting in the sun cautiously tucking into some piping hot goodies!

Wow. Everything was totally delicious. Fresh, medium chunky chips…

Soft, moist cod in thin, delicious batter…

And mouthwatering, rich, glistening Irish curry sauce.

JJ’s proves that Stevenage is more than a bygone film location.
