Return to Kerry's Chippie, Ilkeston, Derbyshire

If you've been reading the Chip Diaries for a good few years you may be recall that we have been to Kerry's a couple of times, reviewing a takeaway in 2017 and a meal in the cafe in 2018. Kerry's is a humble but excellent chip shop that took our fancy by serving mushy peas under the chips when served in a takeaway tray. This means the crispy batter on the fish isn't softened by hiding under the pea slop! On our return visit the cafe had had a noticeable makeover. It seemed more spatious and the friendly waitress was chatty and attentive.

The Chip Fiends had 'fish and mix' (mix being chips and peas) and a mug of tea each. We decided to treat ourselves to a 'large' fish and as the waitress pointed out, it was a 'whale'.

The whole meal was 'clean' and fresh. What we mean by this was that it wasn't at all stodgy and starchy. The fish had, thin, crisp batter, and the fish inside was pure white and tasty. The medium-cut chips were golden and delicious. The home-soaked peas were pale and creamy. Yum.

Kerry's doesn't have long opening hours, and because it's so good, there is usually a queue for both the takeaway and cafe, so be patient and prepared to wait. It will be worth it.
