Kerry's Fish and Chips (cafe), Ilkeston, Derbyshire

The Chip Fiends loved their takeaway from Kerry's so we thought it would be fitting to return to this Ilkeston chip shop and try out the cafe.

We went on a Friday lunch time and just like our previous visit, we found a queue of customers trailing out the doorstep.

After hovering in the entrance to the cafe for a while waiting to be seated we called to a member of staff and asked if we could use a vacant table.

The cafe was relatively busy but not so much as the takeaway counter. The interior is smart, clean and unfussy, with PVC table cloths.

An illuminated menu on the cafe wall lists the food and drink on offer. One of us went for a small 'fish and mix' and the other had a large fish with small mix. Mugs of tea were also ordered as were sachets of tartare sauce.

"What is a mix?" You may ask. This is what Kerry's call a fish and chip meal with mushy peas. There are also options to have just fish and chips or just fish and peas.

The hot food arrived almost immediately and didn't disappoint. The unmistakeable Kerry's thin crispy batter encasing a fresh piece of haddock made our mouths water. It all tasted as good as it looked too.

Waiting staff carried buckets of hand cut chips through the cafe from the kitchen at the back to the fryer at the shop front. We noted the award for Ilkeston's best chip shop of 2014.

We wondered why we weren't provided with napkins. Luckily one of us had some tissues in our bag.

The bill came to a very reasonable £13.45. This food is easily as good as the Magpie Cafe in Whitby. The only thing missing is that extra sparkle that a few smiles from the waiting staff could provide.

As we got up to leave, one of us spotted a small pile of napkins on the window sill. If only these had made it to the table...
