Our Favourite Chip Shops of 2023

It’s time for our round up of the tastiest fish n chips and best service of the year!

Regular readers will be aware that we are often pleased with the chippies we have visited around Sheffield. We can add Norfolk Park Fisheries to our list. The lovely meal had great mushy peas and was good value for money.

On the outskirts of Sheffield in Grenoside we visited a proper old-fashioned chippy called Pete’s and got there just before the lunchtime queue started to grow. The food was delicious and heart warming.

At Charlie’s Chips in Chorley, Lancashire we had a mini fish and chip meal with creamy peas, fresh fish and super tasty chips. Great service too. (The big fat chip at the top of this blog is from Charlie's!)

Yorkies Pop up Chip Shop is a fantastic chip van with high quality fare. The curry and peas were equally satisfying. The fish had lovely crispy batter, was fresh tasting and hot. The chips were chunky and delicious. The owners now have a restaurant in Leicester city centre that you can hire for events.

A memorable restaurant meal was eaten at Sea Fish, Ripley, in Derbyshire. The service was very friendly too.

In Scarborough, Lifeboat Fish Bar was yet another delightful chip shop we tried at this seaside town we have featured in our reviews over the years.

In nearby Whitby our lovely meal at Fish Box was enhanced by the spicy Irish curry sauce and homemade tartare sauce.

Robertsons Chips Away (also in Whitby) was a revelation in fresh, tasty food. Although this town has some other well-known chip shops, we recommend you try this place. We sprinkled chip spice on our meal to give it an extra kick.

Further south - in Devon - we tried two chip shops in Combe Martin. The Top Chippy was our favourite. The crispy coated chips were dreamy.

Our visit to Clopton Catch at Stratford upon Avon brings back happy memories. We tried a few things on the menu here and again, the curry sauce was a standout. The chips were lightly battered here which was also a nice surprise!

A favourite chippy in Nuneaton got a top score this year: Horestons as did St George’s Plaice in nearby Coventry. The latter had a fish with audibly crispy batter. No soggy sponge here!

Stonefield Fish Bar at Stone was our favourite in Staffordshire in 2023.

This year will be the year we remember for the £2 cap on bus fares. It made for some interesting and low price journeys. A few trips to Buckinghamshire meant we could try some chip shops in Milton Keynes and the surrounding area. Our favourites in this region were Moores Fish & Chips at Monkston Park, Milton Keynes and Fenny Fish Bar in Fenny Stratford.

Unfortunately Lighthouse Fish Bar, Northampton has already made another list this year. That of chip shops that no longer exist. There should be more fish restaurants like this establishment was, combining good quality food and craft beers in a smart setting. Such a pity it closed not long after we visited.

Let’s keep a look out for quality fish and chip shops and help them survive. Don't let them all become museum exhibits like the wonderful Hobbs and Sons at the Black Country Living Museum.

See you in 2024!
