Our Best Chip Shops of 2019

Here goes... the moment we have all been waiting for! Our favourite top-scoring chip shops of 2019. A time to reflect on some satisfying crispy batter, some delicious chips, perfect peas and mouth-watering curry sauce...

Ambergate Fish and Chip Shop is a great little chippy. A short train ride from the Derbyshire chip shop central that is Matlock Bath, Ambergate is a small restaurant and takeaway where you will find fish freshly fried to order from the attentive and polite owner. We loved our meal there where some tartare sauce was whisked up especially for us!

Beaufort Fish Bar, Derby, had delicious chunky chips. They were freshly-fried along with the fish.

The Big Fish at Beeston, Notts, is worth a mention. Having previously visited and scored the shop '4' we found the place had improved under new management and scored '5' on our return visit.

The Big Fish

Contender for one of the friendliest chip shops ever was Ocean Bay in Kettering. The food was excellent too. A great Friday evening was spent in Kettering due to this chip shop!

Ocean Bay

The juiciest pineapple fritter was chomped in Burbage, Leicestershire at Burbage Fishery. The fish and chips here were superb. Definitely a chippy we’ll be returning to.

Burbage Fishery

Not far from Burbage is London Road Chippy, Hinckley. A great meal of mini fish and chips and mushy peas was had here. Another on our list of the top recommended chip shops.

London Road Chippy

Smith’s Chippy at South Shields was memorable for having delicious food at a reasonable price. The scraps were a great bonus.

The Lite Bite cod and chips from Bury Fish and Chips were also marvellous. Although we had a takeaway on the bench outside, this chippy has a cafe that looks worth trying.

Ray’s in Leicester’s Highcross Shopping centre was a pleasant surprise. We visited when the shop had recently opened. It was more like being beside the seaside than a shopping centre.

Another restaurant meal we enjoyed was at John Dory's in Quorn, Leicestershire. This was a fabulous place that lived up to its reputation for top quality food and service. The batter was so light and crispy we could see the fish through it.

Marina Fish and Chips
in Glasgow was where we found enthusiastic service of the Frickled Egg. The fish and chips were very good too.

Marina Fish and Chips

Although the shop wasn't an overall top-rater, the mushy peas at Eastwood Town Fish Bar made us happy. They were the proper chippy type. They were homemade; still held their shape; and had a nice runny sauce. These were the best peas of the year for us.

Peas at Eastwood Town Fish Bar

Supreme Fish Bar of Loughborough lived up to its name. Another great meal here eaten in the shop to the hits of Queen.

Supreme Fish Bar

A second visit to Newcastle upon Tyne meant one of us was able to visit Fenham Fish Bar. Scraps galore, huge skinless haddock in gorgeous batter and super chips. The mushy peas were thick and tasty too.

Fenham Fish Bar

Of a similar ilk was Silk’s Fish and Chips at Scarborough. The organised queuing system was impressive, and the fact that everything was cooked to order meant that the food was piping hot and fresh. We have eaten some excellent fish and chips this year but the visit to Silk’s was a revelation. Every mouthful a delight. A memory of how you imagine fish and chips used to be from way back. Perfection.
