This has got to be one of the most memorable chip shops we have tried on our tour of fine chippies.
Marina Fish and Chips is on the Pollokshaws Road, south of The Clyde. They don’t serve pollock on this shore (geddit?), but they they have an interesting menu nevertheless. The fish they serve is haddock (in two sizes). Also on offer is:
Black pudding
White pudding
Calamari
Smoked haddock fish cake
and macaroni pie.
What we really came here to try however was the Frickled Egg.
Marina Fish Bar had only started serving them a few short months when we visited, but this delicacy was already gathering some attention. In fact it is probably only a matter of time before the Frickled Egg catches on and spreads further south.
Like the battered creme egg, the Frickled Egg cooking process improves upon the original. The egg is encased in a very thin but crispy breadcrumb batter. On this Chip Fiend’s visit the enthusiastic owner cut the egg in half after frying and put it on the counter for me to eat. He sprinkled a teeny little salt on it. The warm egg with its combination of crisp outer and rubbery inner was a delight.
After I had finished the egg, the owner served up the rest of the meal: a small haddock supper with mushy peas. The fish was cooked to order. Nothing going chewy in the cabinet here. I walked a short way to Queens Park to eat, carefully avoiding a hungry flock of seagulls and an inquisitive pooch with bulging eyes.
The chips were pale golden and chunky with lovely straight edges. The haddock was perfect. It had fresh, fat flakes that fell apart when I peeled back the thin, crisp batter.
The peas came in a strangely chopped up, but rather generous 16oz portion. Probably best for sharing. They were quite runny and therefore made a good dip for the chips.
If you are in Glasgow, make a bee line for this chippy. You’ll get a warm welcome from the Italian gentleman behind the counter but be sure to order the Frickled Egg!
