The Chip Fiends have visited Suffolk before to try some lovely fish and chips in Southwold. However, if you are in this county but nowhere near the sea, the town of Bury St Edmunds might make another good option. There seem to be a lot of fish and chip shops in or near to the town centre.
This Chip Fiend took a fancy to the eponymous Bury Fish and Chips. There is a restaurant on one side of the establishment and a take away counter on the other.
The shop serves various types of sustainable
fish, and lets the customers know from where it is sourced.
I fancied a light lunch so went for the ‘Lite Bite’ on offer at £4.60. This was a delectable portion of skinless cod in a light, crisp
batter sitting atop a sensible portion of medium cut chips. Served in a ‘Lite Bite’ card box with a wooden fork, I was invited to put salt and vinegar on for
myself. Some convenient wooden benches outside the shop’s front windows made an
ideal place to sit and eat on a nice day.
The chips were a pleasant golden yellow,
and beautifully crisp on the outside. However, the fish was definitely the star
of the show.
The flakes of deliciously fresh-tasting cod were pure white, and
the batter was the type that you can eat without it sitting heavy on the stomach.
Needless to say it was an empty box that made its way to the bin after I had
finished my meal.
