May - June 2025 Round-Up

How quickly the months pass in fish and chip days!

Who of you enjoyed National Fish and Chip Day? It was the tenth anniversary of this momentous occasion on the chippy calendar. Needless to say the Chip Fiends paid their dues by demolishing some battered fish and chipped potatoes on Fryday 6th June.

We are looking forward to next year already. In the mean time, here is a round-up of our recent YouTube video posts and a sneak preview of what is to come...

First off: a YouTube video of a favourite chippy we had previously visited: Rothwells in Doncaster. What a fantastic chip shop with friendly service, freshly fried fish and unctuous curry sauce. If we lived locally we would definitely go more often.

A visit to Stevenage JJ’s Plaice for some of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had.

Lovely fish and chips in a beautiful town. The Maypole in Otley. We followed this by beers in some traditional pubs.

A similarly pleasant day was spent in Skipton where one of the Chip Fiends had a meal at Bizzie Lizzies.

Fish and chips in Kidderminster at Foleys followed by a trip to Stourport on Severn.

Two Steps, Sheffield. This is a chippy we reviewed in 2016. We returned more recently and filmed our experience. Our meal included a mushy pea fritter.

Penny Black, Scarborough used to be one of our favourites when it was called Swifts. Have a look at the video and see if you think the meal is up to scratch.

Other notable excursions:

Black Country Chippy for some battered chips.

Riverside, Bakewell. Fish and chips and ducks quacking!

The Chippy of Chinley during a camping trip.

Pollards Plaice at Hull.

Fryday’s at Kettering.

Blists Hill Victorian Town for fish and chips in a paper cone.

The Rock, Whitwick, Leicestershire. This is a micropub and cafe in a residential area that promotes a fish and chip meal every Friday.

Poppies at Camden. This is the only branch of Poppies we hadn’t visited before. The cinema seats outside the shop are handy for takeaway diners!

Maddies in Ilfracombe. This chippy is the one to make a bee-line for of you are at this Devon resort. It’s the most traditional chip shop here. Fish is fried to order (inc haddock or cod) and there is a cafe if you prefer to eat away from the threat of gulls.

Coming up in the future:

There will be YouTube posts about chippy visits in Long Eaton, (Derbyshire), Sheffield (South Yorkshire), and Sandbach (Cheshire) amongst others. The latter where one of us had to eat in a phone box to avoid the rain!
