Our Favourite Chip Shops of 2018

Dear chip lovers. It is time to share our top chip shops of the past year with you. We have enjoyed plenty of mouth-watering meals over the past twelve months, but we rarely award our top score of 5/5. To reach the top, a chip shop must make a perfect combination of fresh, hot, quality produce with good service, or smart or characterful surroundings.

We like our fish to be steamed inside a thin crisp batter; our chips to be medium to chunky and crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Sometimes, however, we enjoy coming across crinkle cut chips!!

Curry sauce should be thick and peppery - not thin and insipid. Mushy peas must be soaked and cooked on the premises and preferably not dyed to an unnatural shade of green. Tinned peas are an absolute no, no!

So, in no particular order here are our favourites:

Renowned for being Britain’s best chip shop and restaurant when we ate there in the summer. Not only is the food of very good quality, but the organisation of the orders is very efficient, too. The fact that no food is left standing in the heated cabinets to slowly go chewy ensures that everything is fresh, crispy and piping hot. Millers had the best tasting tartare sauce we ate in 2018 too.

This chip shop on the outskirts of Burton-upon-Trent used to be a pub. The service here was excellent. The staff sprinkled salt and vinegar on the chips before placing the fish on top. The mushy peas were undyed and the curry sauce was a peppery Chinese-style.

Queens

Not only was the food amazing here, but the jolly atmosphere of the busy chip shop added to the experience. Thank goodness we arrived before the rush of holidaymakers because there was a long queue snaking out of the shop when we left.

Yorkshire Fisheries proved to be another satisfying seaside chippy experience. The fish, chips and mushy peas were all delicious, and we were impressed by the option for diners to have a half portion of chips if they don't want to get too full. The squeezy bottle of tartare sauce on the table was a generous touch.

The chips we had here were medium thick, pale golden yellow and crispy outside and floury inside. They tasted so fresh and delicious. The masala fish we had here was very memorable. Chunks of succulent cod coated in an aromatic blend of spices. The food was cooked efficiently to order on the Saturday lunch time when we called in.

Sids Golden Chippy, Stamford:

A golden chippy at the end of the rainbow was Sid's in Stamford, Lincs. A sign in the shop states they get their fish delivered daily from Grimsby; clearly this is why it tasted so fresh and delicious. The chips were excellent too.

London Road Chippy, Hinckley:

A great chippy with good customer service - salt and vinegar is sprinkled on the chips before the peas and fish are placed on top. The batter on our mini fish was light and crispy, and the chips were perfectly crisp on the outside and floury on the inside. We definitely will be returning here to try other treats on the menu.

Abbey Friar, Sheffield:

This gem was a chip shop where every aspect of our review (fish, chips, peas, shop and service) gained a top score of 5. The fish was encased in a delightfully tasty batter that really enhanced the meal. (See the photo at the top of this page for a close-up of the fish and batter). Every last morsel of delicious food was eaten.

Robinson’s is a very quaint looking shop that serves its chips crinkle cut. The portions are good and fish is fried to order. The mushy peas that were dolloped over the meal were the best we had all year!

Our visit to Shelton Lock in Derby gave us the possibly best chips we have eaten this year. Hot, chunky and firm on the outside / fluffy on the inside, and the portion was big enough for leftovers to be taken home! The service was charming too.

We will carry on with our tour of the finest fish and chip shops in 2019 when our Christmas dinner has gone down...
