Shelton Lock Fish Bar, Derby

We found the perfect chip... we may have said this before. Was it when we went to Rainworth? Any way we found it again. For definite. In a modest chip shop on the outskirts of Derby.

There was some delicious looking fish in the heating cabinet but when we asked for haddock it was prepared specially. This must be Shelton Lock's prime fish. It's listed proudly on the menu as a 12oz portion of Scottish haddock. The smaller cods looked a satisfying size too. There were some interesting looking battered spherical objects in the cabinet. Scotch egg sized. Maybe they were the homemade fish cakes? Whatever they were they looked very tempting.

After a short wait it was time to try the boxed food. It was perfection. Deliciously fresh fish in a light crispy batter, it squeaked on the teeth. The chips were the holy grail of chips. Chunky, square cut with crisp, straight edges and soft on the inside. Very tasty with no hint of grease.

The peas were nice with evidence of some whole peas swimming in the sauce. The colouring was quite lurid though. Reminiscent of some we had at Carlo's Catch several years ago.

This is the kind of chip shop that workmen frequent and families visit to take their orders home. It's not so easy to eat a takeaway outside as there doesn't seem to be any benches nearby.

This is also a place where staff call customers "my lovely" and chat with regulars. Add this to delicious fish and outstanding chips and you've got the perfect combination.
