Central Fish Bar, Ossett, West Yorkshire

I wasn’t planning on getting chips but started to get hungry. Wonderful, a fish and chip shop with cafe tables was nearby.

Central Fish Bar is one of those very traditional chip shops that has limited opening days and hours. (See also Upton in Lincolnshire and Pete’s at Grenoside!) You can only buy chips here on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday lunch times.

I had a small fish, chips and curry. The meal was served on paper with metal cutlery. I had the option of having sauce over the chips or in a pot. A pot was best on this occasion or the paper would’ve gone soggy!

The chips were in a little paper bag. I can’t remember the last time I ever had chips served like this! I got all nostalgic for the times when a ‘bag of chips’ really was chips served in a bag! 30p as I recall back in the day. Depending on your age you might even recall a bag of chips at thruppence.

The chips were fried dark. They were soft and tasty.

The fish had a similar dark batter. I thought it was a nice slab of firm cod, but have since been told the shop only serve Icelandic haddock.

The curry was thick and peppery.

A serviceable lunchtime meal but not something to go wild about. I’m glad that these types of chippies are still serving communities. Central Fish Bar  was very busy when I visited I’m glad to report.

  1. Please note the Central only serve Icelandic haddock not cod.
