The Cod Shop, Minehead, Somerset

What’s that rumbling sound? It sounds quite rhythmic and distant but it could be my stomach crying out for some fish and chips!

The Cod Shop on Minehead’s main Parade was just about to open for chippy tea time so the Chip Fiends made a bee line for the cafe.

The tables are hidden at the rear of the shop, behind the frying area. Everything is smart in blue and white and spotlessly clean. We placed our order at the counter and  took our seats.

Our meals were haddock, chips and mushy peas; and cod, chips and curry sauce. Sachets of tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon are included. We had tea to drink.

The wait for our fresh, tasty food wasn’t long. Both cod and haddock (with skin) had lovely, crispy batter. The flakes of fish were cooked to perfection, falling apart as we stuck our cutlery into the flesh.

The chips had a homemade look to them. They are peeled and cut on the premises and it showed. They were cut to a medium / delicate thickness and fried till golden with firm, straight edges.

The mushy peas tasted authentically good. The curry sauce was the traditional chip shop flavoured curry and mixed good and thick.

We polished off the contents of the plate but I could still hear a rumbling sound. In fact it sounded more like the thumping of several drums. Upon exiting the shop we were greeted by a bacchanalian crowd of revellers following the Minehead hobby horse. We joined the parade.
