Rennards Fish and Chips, Scarborough, North Yorkshire

You can’t miss Rennards. If you’ve been to Scarborough since 1966 you’ve probably either eaten there or walked past it as it’s on a cross roads between North Marine Road, Castle Road and St Thomas Street.

I ordered the takeaway special (haddock, chips and side) at £5.50 and asked for added scraps. My fish was fried to order and after a short wait I was sitting at one of the picnic benches outside the shop tucking into my chippy tea.

The meal was definitely good value for money. A decent sized portion all round and the peas came in a pot rather than poured over.

The fish was moist and flaky and cut quite thick. It tasted just like you imagine it to when you’re on holiday. Slightly alkaline but that’s meant as a compliment!

The chips were cut chunky and were nice enough but just starting to go a tad chewy as I’d missed the lunchtime rush and they had prob been standing a while.

The homemade mushy peas made a great accompaniment. Thick and starchy. The shop is open all day which is very handy if you find yourself hungry mid afternoon as I did.
