Scallywags Fish and Chips, Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire

I would’ve loved to have sat in the cafe within view of the fryer. However Scallywags is so popular you’ve got to be there early to get a prime spot like that! This is the type of chip shop where customers hug members of the family who run it, and where diners speak in exultant terms to the extent that they should be reviewing food on this very blog.

“Do you like fish? Try the steamed fish with parsley sauce!” “The chips are so soft inside… The peas are proper green.” “These will be the best fish and chips you’ve ever had” and so on...

One family spent £36 on fish and mashed potatoes followed by apple pie and custard. They referred to the latter merely as ‘your finest’ when ordering and the waitress knew what they wanted.

Onto my meal then. Very good value for money. £8.40 for battered cod, chips, mushy peas and a mug of tea. Everything was cooked to order and service was swift.

The chips had a homemade look about them. Thin with straight edges and a dark golden colour to them. They tasted rather good with lashings of salt.

The peas were delicious. Yes they were very green! But they were also soft, moist, and creamy and didn’t dry out.

I enjoyed the fish but it didn’t blow me away. It was a flattish filet of cod with a dark batter on it. Satisfying but not amazing.

Altogether the meal was piping hot with a noticeable steam rising from it.

What really stood out was that the waiting staff and the shop owner were very jolly and clearly loved their work. I’d definitely go back again, but early enough to sit within view of the fryer!
