In our ninth year of Chip Diary entries we travelled north, south, east, west. Here’s a list of our favourites from 2022:
Two Peak District chip shops made the grade. Toll Bar at Stoney Middleton not only served great food but was big on charm with its diminutive stone-built architecture! The Hathersage Fish Bar was also a welcome treat for hikers in this tourist destination town.

In Doncaster we were delighted by the unctuous curry sauce and chunky chips at Rothwell’s. The super light crisp batter on our delicious haddock at Fishbits was impressive.

Scarborough is a town that seldom disappoints. Ramshill was a new chippy for us with some fabulous chunky chips. Delicately crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Smallfry is an old favourite of ours and we were pleased to report that the chips were every bit as tasty as they have always been. Marks brought back memories of childhood and the mound of scraps were amazing. This is what fish and chips at the seaside is all about.

Sheffield is one of our favourite chippy cities. This year Frymaster appears as a high scorer. We tried an excellent value meal here in a popular and busy restaurant.

In the Northwest we visited Weston Grove, an award winning chippy in Chester and Railway Road Chippy, Chorley which boasted the thinnest coat of crunchy batter. The meal here cost an ultra bargain £5 which matched the 5/5 score we gave the shop!

Lee’s and Unthank were two Norwich chip shops with great service and food to match. The wrapping skills at Lee's were particularly notable. The food was kept warm on a cold January day in an open-topped parcel dextrously sculpted out of paper.

In the East Midlands we enjoyed our meals from Fat Tony’s in Leicester, Kingfisher at Codnor, and Fryday’s at Kettering.

In the West Midlands we tried a divine yet rare delicacy of battered salmon at the Island House Fish Bar in Wolverhampton.

Over in Hagley we poured some moreish curry sauce over a 'bostin' meal at Our Plaice.

We were taken by the branding of Alrewas Fryer in Staffordshire and the food didn’t disappoint either.

2022 was the Chip Diaries’ first visit to Hertfordshire. Whilst on this jaunt we tried possibly the finest curry sauce ever at The Camp, St Albans, and indulged in a jar of homemade tartare sauce at Godfrey’s at Harpenden.

Which chip shops were the best of the best? The chips at Bestwood Fisheries in Nottingham would be difficult to top. Fresh, chunky and deeelicious!

Byrnes in Liverpool had been on our list for a long time so we were really chuffed to try the amazing fish, chips and fruity curry. We also treated ourselves to the homemade fish cake and cheese savoury. Top notch scran! |

Another long wait was satiated when John Dory’s at Loughborough finally opened in December. The food and all-round quality of the shop was every bit as good as the sister shop in Quorn. Wonderful.
