Heathcote Fish bar, Whitnash, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire

It must be around twenty years ago when  we previously visited this shop. Back then we thought they were some of the best fish and chips we’d ever had. I remember tucking into a car picnic of a huge haddock and chips one late summer afternoon.

Here we are back again, this time with a postman waving at us through the window as we took a photo of the chippy.

One of us went for the all day special of mini fish, chips and mushy peas. T’other had a large haddock, chips and curry sauce.

It’s a no frills chippy that probably hasn’t changed since our previous visit.
The mini was in the hot box along with some enticing looking scallops. The large haddock was cooked to order.

The mushy peas looked amazing. Those pale un-dyed ones we love so much. They certainly were the star of the special. The chips were cut to a dainty size and were full of flavour. Cod was the mini fish which was nice but not as delicious as the haddock, a thick portioned skin-on piece that had that fresh “seaside” flavour. The curry was standard.

It’s worth noting how popular this shop was on our visit, with lots of customers popping in and out. One woman bought a huge bag of food that included “three sausages for the doggies”. No doubt her mutts look forward to their Saturday lunches every week.
