Merchants Fish Bar, Bewdley, Worcestershire

Merchants is a chip shop we visited years ago on a holiday in Worcestershire and Shropshire and had it earmarked as a place to return to for a Chip Diary entry.

It’s right by Telford’s Bridge on the Severn and therefore a perfect place to eat and look at the views.

This Chip Fiend had a takeaway cod meal for £7.50 with mushy peas. The chip shop also serves haddock and roe. Adjacent to the takeaway shop is the restaurant where you can treat yourself by paying a bit more.

After a few minutes wait the meal was ready and I took it to a picnic bench on the riverside. The food was piping hot. I’d have preferred a bit more salt and vinegar on the chips but other than that it was fine.

The chips were a nice pale gold and quite fluffy inside.

The cod was fresh tasting with some big flakes at the thicker end. This part had some soft batter, whereas the thinner end of the fish had the type of thin, crisp batter you want to eat.The mushy peas were homemade and rather good.

The meal was a big portion so I didn’t manage to eat it all.Ratings out of 5:Fish (cod): 4Chips: 4Mushy peas: 4
