Heworth Plaice, Heworth, York

A walk of about 30 minutes will take you from York centre to Heworth. There are some lovely Victorian houses in this well-to-do area that has its own tennis club. A portion of fish and chips would be well-earned after a game.

On my visit I had the fish meal from the specials board. A fairly substantial fillet of cod with chips and a pot of mushy peas for £6.70.

The fish was fried to order, seasoned and boxed. There are a couple of benches on the junction outside the chippy and another one a few yards away outside Holy Trinity Church, so there are plenty of places to sit and eat.

The chips were very nice. They had a real homemade look to them, being cut on the premises in quirky, irregular shapes. Some looked like slices of lemon! They were also on the chunky side and tasted delicious.

The cod was a thick cut fillet. It was lovely and moist, and it’s crisp batter was very tasty. The food wasn’t stodgy so I managed to eat all the batter, which I don’t always do.

The mushy peas were also the real deal. I prefer them a bit runnier but they were the right shade of green and tasted great.

A chippy meal that was worth every penny. The staff were very friendly too.
