The Chip Shop, Loscoe, Derbyshire

The Chip Shop is an unusually situated chippy in a new-build block adjacent to a gym and MOT centre. You could get your tyres changed and have a chip butty while you wait.

The shop serves cod, haddock, fish cakes, scampi and cod roe.

I had small cod, chips and curry sauce for under a fiver. The shop best caters for those taking food home or for car picnics. There’s nowhere nearby to sit and eat al fresco. On the day I visited, customers were eating in their cars, then depositing their packaging in a bin outside the chippy door.

My cod had been standing in the hot box but was still pretty fresh. It had thin batter and the flakes of cod were chunky for a small portion. There was only a tiny bit of sogginess in one patch of batter, so although I peeled that section away, I did eat the rest of it.

The chips were good and fluffy inside. The sweet curry was the standard type with flecks of soya in it, but it was mixed nice and thick so it clung to the chips.

A clean chippy with quick service. Worth a stop if you are driving on the A6007.
