Hathersage Fish and Chips, Hathersage, Derbyshire

We were looking at the website for this chippy before visiting. Apparently the same owner looks after Union Jack Fish and Chips at Chesterfield (which we have visited) as well as another one at Dore. They’ve done well to open one in Hathersage - a Peak District tourist spot that was crying out for a chippy!

One of us popped in during lunchtime and ordered mini fish (cod), chips, and curry sauce, open. I paid with cash as the shop aren’t willing to accept card payments under £10.*

The friendly chappy behind the counter said with excitement “nice and fresh for you; just come out!”

I found a seat nearby and gazed in wonder at the thick, unctuous Chinese-style curry sauce clinging to the fresh chunky chips. What a mouth watering sight.

The food tasted as good as it appeared to the eye. The batter on the cod was thin and crisp. The cod itself was white, firm and juicy.

The chips were fresh as a daisy; piping hot and with just the right amount of salt for this Fiend.

The curry was amazing. So delicious. Mixed good and thick, just how I like it.

The portion size was on the nose: no wastage from this meal.

* Make sure you’ve got cash if you’re only buying a cheap meal as I’m not sure there’s an ATM in the village. (The only bank has closed down).
