Waldo's, Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire

No visit to the seaside is complete without fish and chips.

We were in Sutton on Sea for the day and at lunchtime decided to toddle along to Waldo’s where we found several other customers waiting for their fish to be fried to order.

There was very good customer service and organisation here. You are called into the shop to place your order and pay, given a raffle ticket, and asked to wait outside for a few minutes. When ready your number is called and the food is passed through an open window at the front of the shop.

Most customers seemed to be having their lunch boxed and bagged. We asked for ours to be served open and ready to eat. Cash or card is accepted here. Service notably came with lots of smiles which added to the pleasant experience. Five or so minutes later the food was ready and we found a bench down the road to sit and eat.

It was evident from first sight of the batter that it was going to be excellent. It was very light, crispy and knobbly. The haddock inside it was juicy and delicious.

The medium-to-chunky chips were satisfying and were nicely salted.

The mushy peas were also very good. We had them dolloped on the chips. They retained some moistness so made a tasty sauce for the chips.

Someone else had also been to Waldo’s by the looks of it and had carelessly dropped one of their chips on the ground. A very determined blackbird was doing its best to make off with this prized morsel of deep fried potato which was probably its equivalent in body weight. Waldo's chips give you wings...
