Chester Green Fish Bar, Derby

The first thing that struck us about Chester Green Fish Bar was the green sign that reminded us ever so of Steve’s at Alvaston. Right down to the jumping fish of the letter ‘i’.

Service was quick and friendly. One of the Fiends had regular haddock, and the other had a homemade fish cake. We shared a regular (and generous) portion of chips, and had a small pot of peas.

It was raining out, so we had the food wrapped and looked for a sheltered place to open them.

The fish was ok but nothing amazing. Some of the batter was soggy inside. The chips quite decent. They had sweated inside the paper of course, but we like them like this occasionally, for a change. You know... how they are when you take them home and they go limp. Nevertheless they were still piping hot and very tasty.

The homemade fishcake was much better than those mass-produced discs that taste of carpet tiles. It was mostly potato but tasted good and had a nice crisp batter on the outside.

The peas were matched exactly to the colour chart of the shop sign’s manufacturer. Radioactive green and from a tin. They had a furry / baby food texture and we didn’t bother eating after one quick taste.
