Carol's Plaice, Scarborough, North Yorkshire

It’s hard to find a chip shop in Scarborough that doesn’t delight. It seems like all the shops sell very good food. We’ve posted several reviews in our Diaries about chippies in this seaside town and we are nowhere near to visiting them all yet!

Most recently we ate at Carol’s Plaice on Columbus Ravine. This is a neat little chippy that has some handy tables outside.

Between us we tried a small haddock, a haddock pattie, chips, a scallop, mushy peas and curry sauce. It wasn’t long after opening time and the chips were freshly fried, as was the fish which was cooked to order.

All the food was piping hot and delicious. The haddock pattie was what some other shops refer to as a Yorkshire fishcake: two slices of potato sandwiching a layer of fish, fried in batter. Very nice it was too.

The scallop was quite thin and so it went a bit soggy, but we couldn’t balk at the bargain price of 40p!

The haddock was fresh, with chunky flakes, and a thin crisp batter.

The curry sauce was pretty standard although mixed nice and thick but the mushy peas were excellent.

The chips were fresh and crisp. Cut from new potatoes, they were very good too. A nice bonus was the chip spice on the counter.

Service was polite and very friendly. A recommended chip shop if you want a quiet snack away from the seafront crowds.
