David's of Dronfield, Dronfield, Derbyshire

This chippy opened just as the U.K. entered lockdown in 2020! Nevertheless David’s soldiered on and seem to be doing very well with their unusual menu that features such rare delights as white pudding fritters!

One of us Chip Fiends paid a visit and tried a mini fish meal with curry sauce and a mushy pea fritter.

Customers are given a gadget that bleeps when your order is ready. The food is served in shallow, lidded boxes and the cutlery is stylishly wooden. The shop interior has fashionable white tiles and is spotlessly clean.

The food didn’t take long to be freshly prepared. The small piece of cod was a perfect compact size for a light lunch or people who don’t enjoy getting stodged. Very fresh and with a thin, crisp batter.

The mushy pea fritter had a similar delicate layer of batter. I did wonder how it managed to hold together with such a thin coat! It tasted nicely of traditional mushy peas and made for a novel way of eating them for a change.

The curry sauce was very thick and had quite a kick to it.

The chips were good and crisp. Again, these came in a sensible portion so I was able to eat them all. They had a slightly translucent look to them. I’m not sure if this was a result of the dripping they were cooked in.
