Chris's Fish and Chips, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire

We have visited a couple of other Chris’s fish and chip shops in nearby Hinckley and Barwell. The chip shop in Earl Shilton is easily the best-looking. With its beautiful front garden it looks like the type of chippy you might find in a grand holiday resort. There are a couple of picnic tables outside so that you can admire the flowers while you eat.

Customers are allowed inside the shop but lots of social distancing measures have been put in place. There is a one-way system, hand sanitiser dispenser, and sneeze screens all along the lengthy counter.

Customers are reminded by notices outside to wear a mask and also to not enter topless! Who on earth would walk into a takeaway in such a state of undress?.. well it takes all sorts.

We approve of social distancing measures but they can cause communication problems. The poor chap who served me my mini fish meal didn’t have a clue what I wanted so the order ended up being served in two separate trays.

Unusually the mushy peas were spread across the top of the fish and the batter scraps were then sprinkled on top. Mushy peas are much better served with the fish on top. [In fact at Kerry’s in Ilkeston they put peas in the tray first with the chips and fish on top of them. Revolutionary!]

The chips were good. They had a nice crisp outer and floury centre. However the meal was fairly standard and marred somewhat by the way it was dished up.
