Salop Fish Bar, Oswestry, Shropshire

Please note: We visited this chippy before they installed the sneeze screens and introduced the social distancing measures for safety.

We recommend the Salop Fish Bar. This chippy has quite a large restaurant space and at the time of our visit you could eat in at no extra charge. I ordered my food at the counter and took a seat. The fish was fried to order and was with me in a few minutes.

This Chip Fiend had haddock, chips, mushy peas, homemade tartare sauce, and a pot of tea for one.

The haddock had delicate flakes under a thin and crisp batter. The chips were tasty. They had a homemade look about them, being cut quite long and dark golden in colour.

The mushy peas were amazing. The real deal. The peas in the sauce had retained some shape but nevertheless had that initial bite followed by softness that we love. Perfect.

The homemade tartare sauce was excellent too. If you visit make sure you ask for this accompaniment to your meal. You’ll be glad you did. The sauce was rich and creamy but had a good tartness to it.

I ate every last scrap on the plate.
