Paul's Plaice, Asfordby, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire

One of the Chip Fiends had been to Paul’s Plaice many years ago. We had heard good things about it recently and thought it time to revisit. When we turned up one Saturday lunchtime the premises looked much the same, but the ownership was now different and the quality of the food was better than we remembered it.

Between us we tried large haddock, large cod, chips and mushy peas. The food was fried fresh to order and we ate in. There’s a seating area to the front right of the shop where you can eat at no extra charge.

The fish was excellent. Piping hot, perfectly steamed inside a light, crisp batter.

The medium chunky chips had a good bite to them and were delicious.

The day-glo green mushy peas tasted good and were a perfect texture. They had plenty of sauce so were not stodgy. Apart from some of the batter we devoured the lot. Wonderful.
