Battered Sprouts (Cods Scallops and Spire Frier)

At Christmas time over the years there have been several specials to whet the appetites of chip shop aficionados. Or is that afishionados?...

Battered mince pies are a rare treat. Some shops have been known to batter Christmas pudding. Then there is the popular battered pig in a blanket.

What tempted the Chip Fiends, however, was the battered sprout. Spire Frier in Chesterfield are serving them this December, along with almost all of the rest of Christmas dinner!

The outlets of the Cods Scallops in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire are also frying battered sprouts.

We had a portion at the Cods and needless to say, the sprouts were excellent. They were served nice and crunchy (who likes soggy sprouts? - nobody!) in a lovely thin, tempura batter. A dip of cranberry sauce made a great accompaniment. The traditional Christmas preserve was a good contrast to the bitter taste that sprouts have. Sprouts are high in vitamins K and C, and fibre. So the generous portion that we enjoyed was doing us good as well as getting us in to the Yuletide spirit. Get 'em quick before the season is over!
