The Jolly Fryer, Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire

We had heard good things about The Jolly Fryer. We had also been tempted by the splendid looking chunky chips proudly displayed on the shop's Instagram account. High time we visited then...

The shop is impressive. Spotlessly clean and with a large space for customers to queue inside whilst perusing the menu and the items in the heated cabinet.

When we entered the premises we were greeted with a friendly wave by the owner. Service was quick so we hardly got time to take everything in!

The large fish sold here are famously referred to as whales so we plumped for a mini (which were still generously portioned - hence its moniker of the mini whale). When we ordered our mini fish, chips and a pot of peas, the friendly member of staff who served us said that if we had the whole meal in one tray we could have a 'Jolly Special' for £4.50. This also included either a small sausage or a fish cake.

A Jolly Special it was then. We wandered a short distance to find a bench.

Although the mini fish had been standing, it's batter was still thin and crisp and the fish fell apart in flakes. Imagine how delectable a large fish cooked to order would have been had we had room in our bellies to eat one.

The chips were tasty and cut on the chunky side. The peas were good too, but had that tendency to weld the chips together that thick mushies do. The fish cake was of the mass-produced variety. We had a nibble but saved the rest for later!

The Jolly Fryer prefixes their name with 'enjoy'. Safe to say we did.
