Draycott Fish Bar, Derbyshire

Note: Since we wrote this review, new owners have taken over the shop. You can read the review of the re-opened shop here!

Third time lucky. We had tried to visit this chip shop twice before to find it closed. We got the impression it's opening times were rather more flexible than those advertised.

Anyway we finally got to eat here. Fish, chips and mushy peas were the order of the day. The service was friendly and swift.

The fish was a fine piece of haddock. On the large side, and perfectly cooked. Once the batter was opened the fish fell apart into lovely big, moist flakes.

The batter was utterly delicious. Very light and with lots of texture. Imagine a pile of tasty batter scraps encased around a fish fillet and that was exactly how it was.

The chips, however, were thinner than we had expected. The mushy peas were dolloped on top, followed by the fish. It was a pity we were not offered the option of salt and vinegar on the chips before the meal was layered. The result being that the relatively dry peas cemented the chips together and this amalgamation didn't have much flavour.
