Abbey Friar, Sheffield

We’ve long held the opinion that some of the best chip shops that can be found are in Sheffield. You’ll find plenty of traditional looking chippies serving unpretentious food at prices you remember you last paid several years ago in shops south of the border.

A visit to the Abbey Friar was long overdue for this Chip Fiend. A short journey on a bus and I was soon standing in a Friday lunchtime queue.

Choice of the day was the lunchtime special of small fish, chips and a side. Most in the queue were choosing curry sauce but I wanted Yorkshire caviar.

The fish was being cooked to order so the staff were kept busy.

Salt and vinegar was added to the chips before the mushy peas were ladled on, then a golden fish was delicately placed on top before a splash more vinegar and salt was sprinkled.

I perched on a picnic table out the front to tuck in. The chips were delicious; they tasted how you imagine chips taste whenever you see a photograph of them.

The batter was thick yet still light. The incredible texture could be likened to a Monster Munch or some other snack.

The batter itself was full of flavour, definitely part of the meal rather than something the fish just be cooked in, then discarded. The mushy peas were un-dyed  and also flavoursome.

A super meal for less than £5.00.

No wonder Abbey Friar won second place in Chippy of the Year 2016.
