Wise Plaice, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire

The Chip Fiends stopped here for a fish supper, and very fine it was too.

The Wise Plaice is on Sherrard Street, the A607 a road that cuts West/East through the town centre. The handy thing about this chip shop (apart from its town centre location) is that it has some tables outside on the pavement so you can sit and eat your fish and chips without having to wander far to find a bench.

The Chip Fiends had the large sized haddock and chips, with peas. The haddock came skinless in a batter that looked pleasingly as though it had exploded upon hitting the oil. The fish had nice, thick flakes.

The chips were delicious. Quite short and chunky. The peas had a natural, undyed look about them.

The trays that the food was served in were deep, and therefore the portion of chips was rather generous. We had to admit defeat before eating all of them. It's a good job we didn't buy the tempting pineapple fritter that was in the display cabinet - we wouldn't have managed to fit it in!

Wise Plaice also serve cod.
