Steve's Fish and Chips Tamworth, Staffordshire

We visited Steve's at tea time. It is quite a large chippy in a semi residential area of Tamworth mid way between the town centre and train station.

The shop boasts quite a big cafe area - all tiled, with pink seating and spotlessly clean.

The Chip Fiends ordered our food at the takeaway counter then found a table as we had chosen to eat inside.

Two others were waiting for food. Then another four came in. The service was friendly but very laid back. We'd been seated about ten minutes before we saw our fish being lowered into the fryer.

We observed one of the staff joking that she wanted one of the customers to leave an empty plate. The gentleman behind the counter announced in song that a steak and kidney pie was ready...

27 minutes minutes after ordering, our patterned Pyrex plates were brought to the table. It was worth the wait.

Haddock, chips and curry sauce; and cod, chips and peas. (The shop also serves plaice).

The chips were fresh as a daisy. Long, thin and flattish in shape, piping hot with edges straight enough to measure right angles. Both the cod and haddock were firm, white and fresh. Squeak-on-the-teeth fish. The batter was satisfyingly thin and crisp.

The curry sauce was ladled all over the chips. Thick and spicy, the curry Fiend could feel it on the tongue hours later. The mushy peas were tasty too.

The whole experience was very enjoyable, and as mentioned before, laid back. Don't visit if you want fast food.
